


The FAA defines a Light Sport Aircraft as simple, easy to fly aircraft that meets the following performance specifications:
▪ Maximum Gross Weight 1320 lbs ▪ Two Place (pilot & passenger)
▪ Maximum Level Flight Speed 120 kts (138mph) ▪ Maximum Stall Speed 45 kts (51mph)
▪ Fixed Landing Gear ▪ Fixed or Ground Adjustable Propeller
▪ Single Reciprocating Engine ▪ Unpressurized Cabin
SPORT PILOT PRIVILEGES
● Carry one passenger. Share expenses (fuel, oil, aircraft rental, airport charges).
● Daytime VFR (Visual Flight Rules). Three statute miles visibility and visual contact with the
ground (no flight above the clouds).
● Cross Country Flying across the United States.
● Fly in Class E and G Airspace (Class B, C, and D with appropriate training).
● Fly production (standard airworthiness certificate) and experimental (amateur built) aircraft
that meet the definition of a Light Sport Aircraft.
● Rental of Special Light Sport Aircraft (S-LSA).
SPORT PILOT LIMITATIONS
● Prohibited from operating in Class A Airspace.
● Prohibited from operating in Class B, C, or D Airspace without training and a logbook endorsement.
● No flights outside the United States without permission from the foreign aviation authority.
● No towing of objects
● No flights for hire or compensation
● No flights for the furtherance of a business
● No flights after dark
SPORT PILOT REQUIREMENTS
● No FAA Medical required (as long as you have never been denied)
● Minimum of 17 years of age
● U.S. Drivers License (must comply with any restrictions)
● Ground Training as required in Part 61.309
● Pass an FAA Knowledge Test
